VINEYARDS
Van Der Kamp Vineyard (Van Der Kamp Cabernet)
The Van Der Kamp vineyard is located on Sonoma Mountain at 1200
to 1500 feet in elevation. The particular lot and block the Tantalus
grapes come from is situated in a protected saddle which maximizes
sunlight and protects from fog and overcast. The result is extra
long hang time with little risk of mildew or rot. The fruit is usually
harvested in late October and in some years into November. This
long, slow, maturation leads to deep, ruby color and complex flavors
of black cherry and cassis. Having many years of experience with
this vineyard and the grower, we make our decisions subjectively.
We pick on flavors, not “by the brix numbers.”
Harwood Vineyard, Sonoma Valley (Harwood Merlot and Harwood
Syrah – Estate Wines)
The Harwood vineyard is small (three acres) and cropped to low production
and high quality. The Syrah is thinned to 3 tons per acre. The Merlot
is a rare combination of clone and rootstock, which results in small
intensely flavored berries which bear up well to the use of fine
quality oak barrels.
Martin Vineyard (Pinot Noir)
The Martin family acquired this vineyard in 1972. It sits in the
center of Sonoma’s Carneros Creek area, and contains two separate
clones. We blend the two clones for our program and expose it to
very high quality French oak for about 12 months.
Terra Alta/Lodi (Tempranillo)
The Terra Alta vineyard is farmed by the Marcus Bokisch family.
Their Spanish roots inspired them to pursue the establishment of
Tempranillo and Albarino varietals, as well as proven hot weather
clones of Zinfandel and Syrah. Our Syrah from this vineyard won
double Gold and best of class in San Francisco in 2001.
